On Tooth Implants

Last Saturday, I attended a lecture/workshop on mini dental implants. I have some experience in oral reconstruction so I just wanted to reinforce my knowledge regarding tooth replacement and prosthesis stabilization. It was a short but concise lecture/workshop, enough to get me fired up to include placement of dental implants in my clinical practice. If you have heard about tooth implants and considering to have one, here are some notes you might want to know. 1. What is implanted is a piece of a 'screw' like titanium metal which will serve as the root for a fabricated artificial crown. This is contrary to some notions that a whole new 'tooth' is implanted in the edentulous area. 2. It does not require a general anesthesia for the dentist to place the implants. Instead, a local infiltration around the area will suffice. 3. More often than not, especially if it's a single mini implant, no incisions or flaps are made. Wisdom Tooth

Wisdom teeth are third molars that usually appear between the ages 16 and 24, although they may appear when older, younger, or may not appear at all. Most people have four of them, but it is possible to have more or fewer. They are generally referred to as ‘wisdom’ teeth because they appear later than the other teeth, at an age where people are supposedly ‘wiser’. Turkish language refers directly to the age at which wisdom teeth appear and calls it 20 yaÅŸ diÅŸi (20th year tooth). In Korean, its name is Sa-rang-nee (love teeth) referring to the young age and the pain of the first love. In Japanese, its name is Oyashirazu , literally meaning "unknown to the parents" from the idea that they erupt after a child has moved away from home. But come to think of it, is “wisdom” age related? Is there a basis for calling 3 rd molars “wisdom teeth”?
