The other day, I encountered an uncommon medical diagnosis, abdominal epilepsy. Maybe I was absent when this was taught in med school or maybe it was mentioned but it just didn't register in my memory bank. Anyway, for those colleagues who haven't heard of this as well, here's what I found out about it, so that next time you are faced with a weird abdominal pain, you will think of abdominal epilepsy as a differential. Barotitis Media

Barotitis media is an inflammation of the ear caused by changes in atmospheric pressure. It is also called aerotitis. This is a problem of inflammation or bleeding in the middle ear caused by a difference between the air pressure in the middle ear and that of the atmosphere - as occurs in sudden changes of altitude, in diving, and in hyperbaric chambers. During a sudden increase in ambient pressure, gas must move from the nasopharynx into the middle ear to maintain equal pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane (ear drum). If the eustachian tube (connecting the middle ear to the back of the nose) is not functioning properly, as in upper respiratory tract infections or allergy, the pressure in the middle ear is lower than the ambient pressure. The relative negative pressure in the middle ear results in retraction of the tympanic membrane and a transudate of blood from the vessels in the lamina propria of the mucous membrane forms in the middle ear. Heard of Myokymia?

I have been consuming an average of 3 “Starbucks mug” amount of coffee for the past 2 months. For one, supply of coffee is ‘bottomless’ in my workplace and, given the location and facilities, it’s the only thing I can do to take a break from what I’m doing. Except for frequent trips to the urinal, I wasn’t experiencing any other side effects of excessive caffeine intake, until last week. I started to have lower eyelid twitching several times a day. I knew it was due to caffeine because I read it somewhere before that muscle twitches can sometimes be precipitated by caffeine, among others. I tried to look this up and here is what I found about it. Myokymia is the spontaneous, fine fascicular contractions of muscle without muscular atrophy or weakness. Eyelid myokymia typically involves the orbicularis oculi muscle of one of the lower eyelids; occasionally, the upper eyelids also can be affected. Have time to read... very nice story.. A man woke up early in order to have his morning devotion (prayer) in the Lord's house (church). He got dressed, set on his way to the Lord's house. On his way to the church, the man fell and his clothes got dirty. He got up, brushed himself up, and headed home. At home, he changed his clothes, and was, again, on his way to the Lord's house. On his way to the church, he fell again and at the same spot! He, again, got up, brushed himself off and headed home. Tired Eyes

I just realized that I am practically in front of the computer almost 12 hours a day. Good thing my migraine doesn’t come often, yet. But I do feel that my eyes ‘get heavy’ at night and I really think it’s because of the prolonged exposure to the radiation coming out from my monitor screen.
