Dealing With Emergency

Pictures from our LaMesa Eco Park Picnic, April 21, 2007 Summer is almost halfway through but some of us may still have plans to go out of town or do some 'gimmicks'. I know we get so excited to enjoy and make the most out of these vacations but I hope we don't compromise safety. It is in this regard that I thought of posting a topic on 'dealing with emergency', just in case it does happen. CPR is easier said and read than done. But, it is even harder if you don't even have any basic idea about it. I hope this will help. Step 1. Check for consciousness . Tap or gently shake the person and shout, “Are you okay?” If you suspect a neck or spinal injury, do not shake the person. If the person does not respond: Adult (age 9 and older): Call emergency services immediately (have someone else make the call if possible). Then proceed to Step 2. Baby or child through 8 years: Check to see if the baby or child is breathing (see Step 2). If

Water!

Last Saturday, April 21, we went to the LaMesa Eco Park in Fairview, Quezon City, to have a picnic in celebration of my grandmother's 89th birthday. We were hoping to get away from the heat and get some cold breeze from the park's greeneries. We were wrong. The temperature there was probably just a notch lower than what we feel at home. Everybody was complaining of the heat and the 'body dryness'that went with it. Good thing we brought gallons of water to quench our thirsts! Under these conditions, how much water do we really need? I looked up for the importance of watching water intake during these times. Let's all be guided by it. These hot summer days should be reminding each of us to pay special attention to our own fluid intakes. Whether you are outside on the job or for recreation, it is important to keep a water bottle handy at all times. Adults should closely monitor the children in their care as well, and see that they drink water throughout

Swimmer's Ear

Clip from our summer family outing in Laguna last April 9. Here's one condition you may get from swimming, just like the lad I saw earlier who just flew back from a Boracay vacation. He apparently spent almost 8 hours a day, for 3 days, snorkling, swimming and diving. On the flight back, he experienced severe pain in the right ear prompting the consult. After evaluation, my impression was Diffuse Otitis Externa, commonly referred to as 'swimmer's ear'! Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the outer ear structures. It typically occurs in swimmers, but since the cause of the infection is water trapped in the ear canal, bathing or showering may also cause this common infection. When water is trapped in the ear canal, bacteria that normally inhabit the skin and ear canal multiply, causing infection and irritation of the ear canal. If the infection progresses, it may involve the outer ear. The most common symptoms of swimmer’s ear are mild to moderate pain that is

Are you Dyslexic?

I received an e-mail lately regarding a certain Willard Wigen,a resident of Birmingham, England, who has a learning disability (Dyslexia), but has talented hands. He makes the sculptures out of dust particles, sugar crystals, etc. Works only around midnight, and can only do some of the work between heartbeats. The pictures in this post are samples of his amazing art. We have heard of the word 'dyslexia" before, probably associated with actors like Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves. But, do we really know what it means? Have you assessed yourself if you also have this learning disability? Are you -bright, intelligent and articulate, but your reading, writing and spelling level is below the average for your age group? -of average or above average intelligence yet have poor academic achievement? -of good oral language ability but performs much more poorly on similar written-language tests? -labelled lazy, dumb, careless, immature, "not trying hard enough,&quo

A Love Story

We celebrated our 3rd year wedding anniversary last April 12 with a dinner date at Cafe Mishka in Timog. The place was our favorite "dating" area before so we thought it would be nice to go back and re-live the memories. Last Saturday, April 14, we also had a 'dinner cruise' on board MV Tennessee at the Manila Bay, as part of the fund raising activity of the Physician's association of Marychiles Hospital. I didn't expect it to be spectacular but it turned out to be something wonderful. We're still in the early stages of our marriage but I do hope and pray, and I will strive for it, that our bond will be forever. I will look forward to our future 'dates' when we're older, just like the couple's story below. LOVE STORY IN McDONALD'S A little old couple walked slowly into a McDonald's one evening. They looked out of place amid the young families and young couples eating there that night. Some of the customers look

Moving On.... and On

To wrap up my series on men who knew how to carry and die on their own crosses, I give you the man who, despite his handicap, changed lives by literally 'moving' on. He is considered as a hero in his homeland and I hope he becomes one of ours too. TERRY FOX : RUNNING WITH DREAMS! "I'm not a dreamer, and I'm not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to." Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox, CC (July 28, 1958 -June 28, 1981 ) was a Canadian humanitarian , athlete and cancer treatment activist . He became famous for the Marathon of Hope , a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research , running with one prosthetic leg. He is considered one of Canada's greatest heroes of the 20th century and is celebrated internationally every September as people participate in the "Terry Fox Run" , the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research.

The Man Who Came back From the Dead !

I would like to tell you a story. It is a true story, because it is about me. I was born in 1930 in Germany to a very orthodox Jewish family. We kept all the holy days, my mother kept a kosher kitchen, and we didn't have much to do with gentiles. Germany was not a good place to be for a Jew in the '30s and '40s, and in time, my family was arrested and sent to Buchenwald, where my father and mother were killed. In Buchenwald, I completely lost my faith, for I could not believe that there could be a God who would let such a thing happen, especially to His People. The allies liberated Buchenwald before the Nazis came for me, and I was passed from one charitable agency to another until eventually I was adopted by a very kind and loving Christian family. They tried very hard to make me feel wanted, but they spoke no German and I spoke no English, They were Christians and I was a Jew, and there was no way for them to know how deeply my experiences had affected me. I had l

Dying On Your Cross: No "Black" Saturday

Here's the third of my series of people who, I believe, had the right way of reflecting on their holy week. Let's continue to be reminded of dying on our own crosses! ERIK WEINHENMAYER: "BLIND" FAITH TO TOUCH THE TOP OF THE WORLD "People have the inner resources to become anything they want to be. Challenge (in a person's life) just becomes the vehicle for tapping into those inner resources," begins Eric Weinhenmayer. "Life isn't meant to be easy. It is meant to be exciting and challenging. But you've got to understand that it's never going to be easy." Thirty year old Weihenmayer lives in Colorado and thrives on challenge. He is a marathon runner, a long-distance biker, a sky diver, and a well known, highly experienced rock and mountain climber. He has climbed the highest peak on three of the world's seven continents and scaled the Nose of El Capitan. He plans to attempt an ascent of Mount Everest, the world'

Dying On Your Own Cross: A "Good" Friday!

What makes a 'good' day? Some people may say it's when everything you have planned for turned out well. For others, it's when you're given more opportunities to do more in your life despite of your circumstances. This is the 'good' friday of one extraordinary girl you are about to meet. KELLEY SPERRY: NOT JUST AN ORDINARY GIRL Kelley Sperry has a rare medical condition called Parry-Romberg Syndrome. This condition causes a deterioration of the muscles and soft tissue of the face, and in cases such as Kelley's, extreme pain and even stroke. Yet through all of this, Kelley Sperry keeps on going and going... Just like the Energizer Bunny. And it's this perseverance that makes her really extraordinary. An A and B student at her school, Kelley has the same dreams and aspirations that other girls her age have. She wants to dance... She wants to be pretty... She wants to be popular... and she wants to be a cheerleader. To achieve these thou

Dying On Your Own Cross: Holy Week 2007

It's Holy Week and we all have our own ways of doing 'reflections'. As Christians, we were taught to remember that great sacrifice of Jesus coming down to earth to save us from our sins. A lot has been said about this and true, there will never be any deed as powerful as that! But, is it enough just to know that and be thankful about it? What have we been doing to become deserving of such grace and mercy? Holy week is only 7 days, what happens to the remaining 358 days of the year? These are the questions we should be reflecting as we go through this season. More than being religious and superficial, we must know what it's really all about. We must know what our 'crosses' are, and how to die on it, just as Jesus did! I will be posting a series of people who, I think, know how to carry and die on their own cross. I hope they will serve as inspiration for us all who still refuse to do the same. Kyle Maynard: Accepting 'No Excuses' http://www.k

Summer Heat!

April 02, 2007 Philippines' Current Temperature : 95°F(35°C) Rel. Humidity: 38% Wind: E at 6 mph (10 km/h) Sunrise: 5:52 AM Sunset: 6:08 PM Barometric Pressure: 29.77"Hg (F) It's the start of April and the heat here in Manila is peaking up. They are forecasting a range of 35-39 degrees Celsius by mid-April to a probable high of 40 degrees towards the end of the month. That would be something! If I had 2 episodes of migraine these past days due to the heat, what more when that time will come? We are planning to have a family outing on the 9th and I am sure, with the heat, most of us will suffer from 'sunburn'. I remember 5 years ago when we went to Palawan with some friends and I literally became a 'sun God' because of sunburn. The look was exotic, but the feeling was unbearable. I don't want to experience that again. Here's a post on 'sunburn'. I hope it will serve as a reminder for all those who are planning to expose their bodies to the f
